2019 Street Rod of the Year

Phil and Debbie Becker’s ’32 Vicky has been in the family since 1976. It was a family street rod for many years in which their two boys grew up riding in that small back seat. After many years in a slumber while Phil built other hot rods, it was decided in 2016 to redo the car for another round of family enjoyment. It debuted at the 2019 Detroit Autorama where it was awarded a Great 8. It went on to be selected as the Goodguys 2019 Street Rod of the Year.

Sunken roof insert

We are going to make a flush fitting roof insert. The original roof opening doesn’t have a deep enough drop so it must be cut out and a new opening made.

Sections are made with a bead roller and shrinker/stretcher to make up the new opening.

It’s completely welded and then prepped to metal finish.

After grinding/filing and sanding.

We are using the original seats but making a steel back and the support exposedo

The seatback is made with a latching mechanism and a light which will need completely hidden wiring.

The seat bottom is made. The passenger seat flips up to allow access to the back seat.

The seatback is painted and assembled.

All ready for Dave Schober to do the cushions.

We started by making a spreader bar that matched the lower body curve.

You can see how much the tank needs to change to match the body and spreader bar curve.

The tank is finished and now the rear aprons need to be made.

The apron is made to fit tightly around all of the areas. The taillights will mount just under the body

the underside of the frame and tank. The frame is now a nice fit to the tank.

We wanted a non-descript type of cover. Eric Perrat (Pinkies Rod Shop) helped us in achieving our goal. Here’s the cad drawing.

Here’s the initial piece machined from a solid block.

The latches that will hold them down using leather straps.

The breathers were made to fit on the ends.

Everything is test fit and ready for painting and plating.

The finished product!

We had Jimmy Smith draw up some designs based on a little input. This is what we decided to go with. We’re using an 8 stack induction setup. We want to make it look more on the classy side.

Here’s the first one machined.

Our buddy Rich Grandlund hand finished each piece. They only need a light coat of primer and then paint. Then Alan Button painted these and the valve covers. He did an amazing job!

All buttoned up!

We are going to use a highly modified 1938 Lincoln Zephyr dash attached to the top of the 3 window dash.

We started by just taking the center gauge section out of the Zephyr piece

Now the one side is added (after removing the ashtray that goes between).

The narrowed Zephyr dash is finish welded to the ’32 upper section.

It’s determined that the gloveboxes are too large and need to be in better proportion with the rest of the dash and interior.

Here’s the downside door. Much better.

Now the waterfall and vent panels.

We had Classic Instruments make the speedometer/gauges just like the stock piece except where it says Lincoln Zephyr has been changed to Ford Victoria. A lot of work for a little, but important change!

After beautiful paintwork work by Adam and Tyler Krause, this is the finished product!
